My First Dermatologist Visit and What I Learned

Last week, I went to the dermatologist for the very first time and wanted to share what I learned about anti-aging. As a teenager, I had HORRIBLE acne, but some Asian parents don't feel that bad skin is a medical situation.
Anyway, I figured that I'm getting older and that starting on a more serious skin regiment earlier rather than too late is always best. :)

My skin is in fairly good shape now. I have some slight discoloration on the sides of my face from acne and sun exposure, and also have the occasional break out. It would also be considered as oily.

So, my main concerns were acne and anti-aging.

For anti-aging, he told me there were three products that made a huge difference.
1. Sunscreen everyday- preferable 35 SPF or higher with Helioplex like Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock, SPF 45, 3 Ounces
2. Retin A- good for acne, glowing skin and anti- wrinkle

The sunscreen part is super easy because there a lot of options that you can pick up at the drugstore, and it's fairly inexpensive.
Retin-A is a bit harder to acquire; you have to have a prescription for it. But, if you do, I want to share a great coupon with you HERE. One of my co-workers told me she pays $120 after insurance pays part of it! That's a lot! With this manufacturer's coupon I showed her, she can get it for only $20! She had no idea. :D
The TNS Essential Serum was $250 if I bought it from the doctor's office. Needless to say, I didn't... You can get it at a deep discount -->SkinMedica TNS Essential Serum, but it's still pretty expensive. I think I'll wait until I'm a little older before I start spending that kind of money... but great reviews on the product!

The dermatologist also let me know that spending lots of money on facial cleanser is a waste. Facial cleansers are not as important as a good cream, serum or moisturizer.

Lastly, if you have dry skin on your body, look for lotions with the ingredient Urea in it or even Urea creams. It is the best at locking in moisture!

Yes, applying sunscreen and Retin A is a great way to keep the skin in tip top shape. Most people had a fair share of acne as teenagers. It's a good thing that there are a lot of ways dermatologists offer these days to get rid of them permanently.

You were right to finally consult a dermatologist for your acne problem. And I think he’s recommended you some good remedies for your skin problem. Also, consulting a dermatologist helps you avoid choosing the wrong products; these may only worsen your acne problem. Anyway, just follow what you’re told to do, and you’re sure to have that healthy skin you want, free from any skin problems.

@Terry, what you said explained exactly what I was thinking. I don’t want my wife to use the wrong products, so it’s really great to consult first with a dermatologist, for her to be given the appropriate and best skin care solution. What I like about being able to consult with a dermatologist is that you can have another session wherein you can see if the treatment given to you really works, and if not, they can make the necessary adjustments for you.

This product is a good way to treat acne and anti-aging problems. But if you want to be rid of that acne as soon as possible, you should go for a microdermabrasion treatment. This treatment involves using magnesium oxide or aluminum oxide crystals. After that, suction is used to suck up all the crystals and remove the dead skin cells, thus leaving the skin with less acne scars.

Seeing a skin specialist is important, especially when it comes to the point wherein you've almost tried every product available in the market. Well, this happens to many people. It’s not that the product you use is ineffective, but maybe there is a better solution for your skin problem. Visiting a dermatologist is vital so that you will really know the right product or treatment option for you. It’s better to consult one as early as possible to prevent your skin problem from getting worse.

We have different skin types, and each skin type has its own treatment. That’s why it is important that you determine what your skin type is first before applying chemicals on your face. There are proven effective over the counter solutions, but don’t settle for what others suggest. What may work on him or her might not work on you. Consult with your dermatologist first to be properly advised.
